Happy Transformation Tuesday, y'all!
Sadly, I don't have any beautiful or awesome new creations to share with you this week. But, I do have some ideas tumbling around in my head. Namely, the idea of buying an ugly, old mobile home and DIYing it into a beautiful, cozy family home.
I have seen some blogs about this before, and thought, "How creative is she?! But I can't do that..." (Like The Shabby Creek Cottage...)
A couple days ago, though, my husband and I were talking about random ideas and how we can come into our dream of owning a house sooner. We have been talking about buying a house for some time now, and actually started looking a while back. But, really the idea of taking out that much debt makes us nervous!

You see, in November of 2010, we read The Total Money Makeover, by Dave Ramsey. He made some really great points, and totally convinced us that debt is baaaad. So, we started the debt snowball and we became officially debt-free on February 15, 2012!!!!! (I still dance inside when I think about the fact that we owe nobody nothin'! Seriously, if you are fed up with your finances, it's a great book to read. Before that, we had no plan for our money. Now, we have a plan and are totally in control of our finances. It's an AWESOME feeling!) And, we have done a pretty good job of building up our emergency fund. (Then, we had some emergencies... So, we are building it back up again.) Naturally, we hate the idea of taking out a loan for $120,000 ish. Yikes! We've talked about saving up and paying cash for a house, but don't love the idea since we are a one-income family with three kids! (It would probably take us 20 years to buy a house and a lot of money wasted going to rent....) |
So, we started talking about the idea of buying some land and putting a trailer (ah-hem, excuse me, a mobile home) on it. I told him about some of these cool blogs I had seen and how I thought it would be totally do-able to make a mobile home a really nice little place to live for a while.
Then, we would be able to actually buy a house (for thousands and thousands cheaper...), pay it off a lot sooner, and start saving to buy our forever home. Then, we could either sell that one or rent it out to earn some extra income.
Plus, we would be able to get a lot of DIY practice for the future, and turn that ugly, old thing into exactly what we want it to be!
We're still talking about it, and don't really know where we will land, but it's an idea!
Check out these blogs from some pretty creative ladies doing just this thing! They totally inspire me and make me want to jump right in and get our hands dirty!
