As of last night, our Christmas decorations are up! We spent the afternoon cleaning up a little bit, and then getting out all of our decorations and putting up lights! As I have talked about before, I love love love Christmas! So, I am always really excited when all of the decorations are up, making our house feel so warm and festive! Especially our back porch, with warm white lights strung, feels like such a cozy safe haven. I love it. :)
Here are a few of our decorations that I am really excited about!

Mantelpiece Noel Letters

This was one of our decorations that I was MOST excited about! I saw something very similar to this on Etsy, but it cost a bit more than I wanted to spend and I knew that I could make it myself! (I always get pretty excited about something when I can do it myself!) So, instead, I went to Hobby Lobby, bought all of the pieces, painted them, and voila! Look how cute it is!
They are all around 9 inches (Some are 8.5, some are 9.5, I don't remember their exact sizes but the "around 9 inches" rule will serve you well... The "N" and "L" are wooden letters and the "E" is a cardboard letter. The "O" is just a little grapevine wreath, and the star was a cardboard Christmas ornament. I already had all of the paint, so this project cost me less than $15!

Advent Calendar & Nativity Scene

I was really excited about these new decorations too! This nativity scene from Willow Tree is definitely my favorite, and a really great start to our set! :) I love how this little table takes a commanding spot in our living room, so we will be reminded constantly that Jesus' birthday is what we are celebrating! I wrote more about how we are trying to take practical steps to keep Jesus at the center of our Christmas celebrations here!
I also made our Advent Calendar. I found this open-backed frame on clearance at Michael's, and found the little envelopes on sale at Hobby Lobby. In all, this project probably cost me about $15. Truthfully, it still isn't completely finished, but I've got a few days! ;) I plan to put a bible verse on each day's card, along with a little prize or piece of candy for each of our kids!

Shepherd's Pouches

I also mentioned these in my post about Christmas. Our Shepherd's Pouches take the place of stockings on the mantel. I have a jar of quarters and throughout the month of December, every time I notice them being especially kind to each other or helpful or being generally good, then they will get to put a quarter or dollar in their pouch. We are saving up to buy Jesus a birthday present!
This gives us the opportunity to reward our kids for doing good to each other and other people, and at the same time, it allows us to talk to them about how we give gifts to God, who is invisible to us. (We help others, we serve the poor, and give to orphans, etc.)
Then, on Christmas Eve, we will add up the money that we have saved and pick out a gift for Jesus from our World Vision catalog! We will place the "gift" by our nativity set, and on Christmas morning the boys' pouches will be filled with small gifts that symbolize the gifts that God pours down on us.

Burlap Nativity Wreath

Once again, we are striving to keep Jesus at the center of everything! So, up on our mantel, in clear view of everything, I wanted a reminder that all of our celebrations are because of Jesus' birth, and because He is our Rescuer! So, I made this burlap wreath and added a nativity ornament to it. I really love how it turned out, and it, like the nativity set, reminds us often that we are celebrating Jesus!
To make it, I just bought a foam wreath from Hobby Lobby, wrapped it in a long, skinny strip of burlap (With dots of hot glue here and there to hold it in place.) and then added the burlap squares. I made several burlap squares, about 3.5" by 3.5". Then, I put the end of a pencil into the center of the square and wrapped the burlap down over the pencil. I added a dollop of hot glue to the bottom of the burlap, and then used the pencil to push it down onto the wreath. Do this over and over again until your wreath is covered! This project costs less than $10! All you need is some ribbon, 1/2 yard of burlap, the foam wreath, and a hot glue gun!

Besides our Jesse Tree, which is not completely done, that is about all of our significant decorations this year! I am loving the warm, cozy feel of our house and love that I have already talked with our boys several times about Jesus birthday and why we celebrate Christmas!
