My great grandma's (Mammaw) quilts have been hanging out in boxes for the past 5 years or so. :(
With our move, we have really been trying to embrace the philosophy of "Use it or Lose it!" And, honestly, I hate the idea of having this special, antique quilt being stored in a box and not being used or seen. It is really a waste to even keep it if it's just sitting around taking up space, right?
So, I finally decided that these quilts were going to get some use! I pulled them out and ohmygoodness! They stunk! Like, stunk up the whole laundry room! So, I stuck it in the washing machine and figured that should help. (I put in the one I liked least, just in case something happened to it, I could rethink my strategy on number 2...) But, washing it didn't help the smell. So, I washed it again with vinegar in the water. That didn't help either. :/

At this point, I was getting a little sad and worried that I was just going to have to throw these babies out with the bath water. :(
So, I searched around the internet and figured I would try the one miracle worker that I have used for smells in all kinds of situations.... Baking soda!
I filled up the washing machine (we have a toploader...), put in about a 1/4 cup of baking soda, put the quilt in and let it sit overnight. Then, in the morning, I washed it with detergent, dried it, and voila! No more smell!
I get to keep them! And finally get some use out of them! I just love to curl up on the couch with a warm blanket, and now I can think of my Mammaw at the same time. :)
What sentimental things have y'all had a hard time figuring out what to do with?
